How appropriate for winter: a skating rink

We've been trying to go a little more green/non-toxic where ever we can around the house for Liam. We decided before he was born to have a go at cloth diapers, which I find are actually better than disposables, especially at containing poo blow-outs. In the summer, I hung most of the laundry out on a new clothesline Andy put in. We switched to All Free & Clear for laundry, which is supposed to be one of the best commercial non-baby-specific detergents.

With the little guy starting to get around on two feet, I began researching new options for cleaning the floors a few weeks ago. I started by booting the Swiffer WetJet and getting a new mop & bucket... the first try was a water/white vinegar mix. It worked alright at cleaning, but it left the hardwood looking really spotty. Researching on the Net, I came across the suggestion in a couple places that a polish could be added when washing with water & vinegar by adding either cooking oil or baby oil to the solution. Now, I remember thinking to myself at the time, "Wow, oil. It seems like that would turn the floors into a skating rink", but being the trusting individual that I am, I tried it today. Well, guess what - it DOES turn the floors into a skating rink! I ended up having to wash them all again... even after that, they're still a little slippery. Andy found another suggestion that passes the reality check test: tea. I'm not sure why it works, but it seems to. I added it in the second wash solution, and it did a fairly good job. Next stop is to find a good bathroom cleaner substitute, since Liam will likely be outgrowing his baby bath sometime soon & moving into the big kids' bath tub.

Totally off the topic, but just wanted to give Auntie Kat & Uncle George a shout-out... Friday is their ultrasound. Good luck, guys, and we're looking forward to hearing whether Cuz P will be a boy or girl!
